GOSHEN, Ind. – When I first heard “Shouldn’t Be” by Lilly Hiatt, I immediately got transported back in time. The singer’s new single reminded me of classic punk-rock hits from the 2000’s like “Beat your Heart Out” by The Distillers or “Dammit” by Blink-182. Such characteristics caught my eye mainly due to the heavy electric guitar presence, which is the main instrumental base of the song, and the raspy vocals that were a big trend at the time.
“Shouldn’t Be” has very clear melodic patterns around the guitar, and doesn’t explore much vocal range or change of pace. However, in the middle to end of the song, the guitar solo steals the show and raises the whole thing to the next level. I found myself going back to that moment over and over again.
Overall, Hiatt’s new release, which will be part of her new 2025 album called “Forever,” is a very catchy track that will have its chorus stuck in your head for days. Moreover, the lyrics, which are in line with the album’s themes of anxiety, self-loathing and self-love, register the moment of realization facing her past, and identifying the need for a change in her life.
As always with the Globe Track of the Week, I recommend checking out the music video for this song, as it illustrates the meaning of the song, in case the lyrics by itself were not enough.
