GOSHEN, Ind. — As a writer, I understand writing down everything as a way to process and fully understand it. I have at least half a dozen notebooks currently floating around my room with everything from interview notes, to-do lists and long journal entries processing the concept of belonging and home. I’ve even written songs about similar concepts and others that touch on hope and life and love.
While I am not a song writer as much as I am a news writer, I understand where Tyler Ballgame is coming from with “Live It Down.” Ballgame describes the song as being about how songwriting leads to the cannibalizing of life and relationships. When you’re putting your heart and soul into writing songs, they get recorded and released, and then they exist effectively forever. Many of these songs are revisited frequently as they’re performed live.
The chorus talks about the experience of writing a song in the moment, releasing it, and having it blown out of proportion. “You couldn’t help thosе little words, oh, from coming out // You didn’t love me, likе the rain, oh, when it’s coming down // When you hear them scream along, all the world around // How you ever gonna live it down?”
And how are you supposed to live it down when some of your deepest thoughts are revealed without the context of why or was written or where you are now?
Tyler Ballgame is currently touring his debut album, For The First Time, Again. More information and tickets can be found at tylerballgame.com.
