GOSHEN, Ind. — From his newest album, Over Before You Know It, “Taxi” comes from Michigander’s Jason Singer as he reflects on getting older and feeling stuck while the world continues to move around him.
The song is energetic and driven predominantly by a guitar, creating an upbeat sound through the song’s reflective lyrics. In the opening lines, Singer immediately introduces the listener to a night out as he sings, “Put you on the guest list / Do you want plus one?”
The song quickly shifts into its main idea as he sings about calling another taxi and “living in the back seat.” The guitars and drums give the song an agitated feeling, almost as if the narrator is constantly moving but never really getting anywhere.
Along the track, he focuses more directly on the passage of time. In the chorus, he repeatedly sings, “Everybody’s getting older except you,” followed by “And I don’t know why.” The repetition makes the lyrics feel almost like a thought that Singer cannot escape. Rather than celebrating getting older, he seems to question what it means to grow up while still feeling connected to the person he used to be.
The second verse continues this feeling of being caught between the past and present. Singer sings about waking up late, wondering how he got there and experiencing “Another Happy New Year.” The lyrics create the feeling that time keeps passing in a cycle, with each year bringing another reminder that life is moving forward.
Singer’s vocals help bring this uncertainty to life. His voice has an energetic, slightly rough quality that fits naturally with Michigander’s indie/rock sound. The song was produced by Jeremy Lutito, with guitar, synths, drums and percussion combining to create a short but upbeat track.
Michigander’s music could be enjoyable for Globe listeners who appreciate alternative and indie rock. “Taxi” is catchy on the surface, but its lyrics give the song a more thoughtful meaning: a reflection on growing older without necessarily feeling older.
“Taxi” is featured on ‘Over Before You Know It’ which was released July 31, 2026. The album contains 10 songs and runs for about 32 minutes.
