GOSHEN, Ind. – Each week, a Globe-pal (AKA a DJ at 91.1 the Globe) takes a song of their choosing, and dishes out a healthy review to be sent out and posted on globeradio.org/music.

The Globe Track of the Week is an excellent way to keep up with the new tunes presented weekly on 91.1 the Globe, the best college radio station in Indiana.

If you want to get right into the meaning of “Demons” by Allison Russell, there’s no better way to do it than hearing it from Russell herself. From Russell: “Demons” is about looking at our traumas, our fears, our pain in the face & not letting them drive the bus. It’s about turning Demons into Freedom Fighters.  It’s a call to courage and community. Worlds within worlds. Imagine a world where we wage peace for the sake of our children. All children, Our children.”

Rarely does a song communicate its message so effectively to me as this one does. From the opening call and response, gospel style chorus; to the steady rhythm section throughout, “Demons” makes you want to evaluate where the demons are in your own life and cast them out.

I’m not usually a huge fan of music videos, but this one I am. Ethan Tobeman made his music video director debut with Russell’s “Demons.” Tobeman and Russell were childhood friends, and Tobeman worked as the creative director on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The music video is a big breakthrough for both Tobeman and Russell, the latter has never done a music video with the amount of visuals this one has.

I would highly recommend both the song and the music video. The song is an anthem, one that, thanks to call and response, can run through your head for as long as you need it too. Check them both out at the link below.
