GOSHEN, Ind. – Each week, a Globe-pal (AKA a DJ at 91.1 the Globe) takes a song of their choosing, and dishes out a healthy review to be sent out and posted on globeradio.org/music.
The Globe Track of the Week is an excellent way to keep up with the new tunes presented weekly on 91.1 the Globe, the best college radio station in Indiana.
When I think of the Black Pumas, I instantly think of their song, “More Than a Love Song,” which has been hitting The Globe airwaves for some time. Now, there’s a new Black Pumas track that I just can’t stop listening to. “Ice Cream (Pay Phone).”
I love how upbeat and fun the song is. It’s one of those tunes, where you just feel like you need to get up and dance. There’s a falsetto voice that comes out, as well as some bass, drums and deeper music, to balance out the high notes.
This song is a bit more different than other Black Puma songs that I enjoy. This track is so cheerful and brings the energy, while other songs by the same group are more melodic and deep and bring out my inner feelings.
Their songs seem to bring out R&B, as well as some groovy blues. As a classic rock super fan, I can feel some of that coming out, especially with the falsetto. It reminded me of “Stayin’ Alive,” by the Bee Gees, with Barry Gibb hitting the high notes. Both songs start out with the falsetto, which really gets you into the song.
But, if you don’t want to take my word for it, you can check out the music video for “Ice Cream.” I really like how they put the video together. There are a mix of shots on a tripod, as well as shots that look like they were shot by a GoPro attached to a band member. The close ups of guitar strings, as well as faces, matched with the upbeat energy of the song and was a good way to make the music video unique. There’s not a big storyline in the video, but it is fun, just like the song, “Ice Cream (Pay Phone),” by Black Pumas.
