GOSHEN, Ind. — “Wildfire Season” by Jobi Riccio, is a new 2025 single by the Colorado based artist. The first song since Riccio’s 2024 single “Final Movie Scene.”
“Wildfire Season” was written by Riccio after experiencing the worst wildfire season in Colorado history. She said, “I couldn’t get the images of the apocalyptic skies from all over the west, nor the intrusive thought that the foothills of my childhood might soon burn, from out of my mind.”
This is dark imagery, but Riccio’s words are beautiful, detailing how her hometown could be on the brink of extinction due to climate change induced fires. Lyrics like “My hometown’s a few short years / From burnin’ down to the ground / So I drive up for an ice cream cone / From the soft serve joint before it’s all gone,” showcase Riccio’s lyric writing skills with her fears for the future.
The song begins softly with an electric guitar riff, adding bass and drums in during the second verse. The chorus features a small breakdown, something that isn’t usual in most songs. This slow down of the instruments draws you into Riccio’s heartfelt lyrics and raspy voice. A small instrumental post chorus section gets stuck in your head with a catchy electric guitar lead line.
The bridge also features a small breakdown in the instruments before building into one final chorus, where all instruments, including Riccio’s voice breaks free, ending the song with the line “Each year it’s harder to pretend / It’s just a season.”
Overall, I think the message, lyrics and vocals of this song stand out the most to me. The instrumentation is basic at best, but serves the song well, while Riccio’s vocals and lyrical ideas get stuck in your head and make you come back for more.
