GOSHEN, Ind. — A new release from up and coming artist ISMAY, American Flag takes our ears for a musical journey, straying to the more electric side of americana as she dabbles in harmonies and high gain electric guitar.
ISMAY is an alt-folk artist, real name (Avery Hellman), who grew up surrounded by the music of Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch. The lyrical influence is evident from these artists but she appears to stray from the well known soothing acoustic guitar in American Flag.
The song depicts what appears to be a rodeo with mentions of a pony, and hopes that the pony will shine when the time of the rodeo comes. The song does not go into detail in any aspect. Vaguely mentioning “Hooves and a head with light rolling around”. What is clear is that there is a connection between two souls as they move through the journey of a rodeo.
As the song builds with heavy electric guitar and a simple drum beat the chorus almost echoes signs of disappointment and the disappointment appears to be confirmed at the end of the song with lines such as “I feel dismay” and “She was supposed to wave an american flag” as if she expected to have a feeling of victory at the end but fell short.
Isamy is not currently on a tour but is playing shows here and there in Nashville and California. If you’re looking for a new artist that will give you a little more volume then many of the other folk artists on the scene at the moment.
