GOSHEN, Ind. — “Boom” by Sierra Hull opens with a slow, strong chord melody that immediately sets a reflective emotional tone. Then her vocals flow — effortless yet rich — inviting you to sway your shoulders and nod your head to the smooth, slick sound. Co-written by Adam Wright, the song begins with the striking line, “Who turned out the light in your heart,” symbolizing a heartbreak
and emotional disconnection, but rather than dwell in sadness, the song quickly pivots into hope.
Each verse ends with the lyric, “And then boom // live to love again,” a recurring phrase that becomes the heartbeat of the song, that “boom” symbolizes the sudden way love and life can return.
As the song transitions to the second verse, there’s a delicate guitar fiddle that adds a touch of texture and warmth. This verse also contains my favorite lyrics from the song, “Take some time to cry // but make some time clean,” a gentle reminder that it’s okay to feel pain, but also essential to make space for clarity and moving forward.
Then comes the chorus, blooming with harmonies and a realization, carried by Hull’s soft heartfelt vocals. Following the chorus is a stunning instrumental break where Hull truly shines. Each string contributes to the emotional arc, but it’s her signature mandolin that stands out, pulling the song back into her bluegrass roots.
As the final chorus returns, there is a small instrumental pause — just enough to make you lean in and appreciate the purity of her vocals and the layered harmonies one last time.
“Boom” is a standout track from Sierra Hull’s fifth studio album, “A Tip Toe High Wire,” released on March 7, 2025. This album marks a significant moment in her career — it’s her first fully self-produced and self-released project, following a five-year break since her acclaimed 2020 release, “25 Trips.” The time away clearly gave Hull space to grow and explore, and it shows. On “A Tip Toe High Wire,” she brings a slightly more indie edge to her signature bluegrass sound.
