GOSHEN, Ind. – Each week, a Globe-pal (AKA a DJ at 91.1 the Globe) takes a song of their choosing, and dishes out a healthy review to be sent out and posted on globeradio.org/music.
The Globe Track of the Week is an excellent way to keep up with the new tunes presented weekly on 91.1 the Globe, the best college radio station in Indiana.
It’s difficult to not get drawn into Ferrell’s “Fox Hunt” from the very beginning, as it kicks off with a rousing chorus of string instruments. It’s not quite a wall of sound, but its just as effective in terms of grabbing the listeners attention.
Beyond the opening strings, a quick choral-like voice echoes in the background that works well with the strings.
From there, Ferrell’s voice takes over and the song reaches its peak in the opening verse. I’ve listened to a song or two from Ferrell, but her vocal performance in “Fox Hunt” is just plain beautiful. There’s no crazy amounts of overdubbing or filters on her voice; the production is raw and it sounds awesome.
What I enjoy most about “Fox Hunt” is when the song lets Ferrell’s voice shine and the band surrounding her fades away. Other than a simple backbeat and a faded bass note, Ferrell’s vocal stands out in the absolute best way.
It’s not entirely clear what “Fox Hunt” is about, but to me it comes off as an ode to hunters and the folks who live off of the land.
As always with the Globe Track of the Week, I recommend checking out the music video that goes along with it as a way of gathering more context for the meaning of the song. The music video for “Fox Hunt” is an odd one to be sure, full of strange animations and mildly creepy images; which is in my opinion, all the more reason to go check it out!
