GOSHEN, Ind. — This week’s Globe Track of the Week is a mellow and groovy tune from the Austin-based singer-songwriter Taylor Rae’s sophomore album, titled “The Void,” which was released on April 18, 2025. The title of this week’s featured tune is “Cologne.”
I found that the title, “Cologne,” was very fitting as it gives an immediate glimpse into what’s to come in this tune, with its lyrics then referring to one’s partner’s scent as their cologne. With this in mind, I really enjoyed taking a deep dive into this tune as it is unlike the music that I typically listen to. Despite its repetitive lyrics, the slow, simple chorus of Cologne captivated me. Yes, the chorus repeats itself plenty, but it’s the good kind of repetition that leaves the sheet music and repeats in your head instead.
More than just how it sounds, though, the combination of blues, folk, and roots-rock fuses together to give the listener a calm and warm feeling inside. Imagine you are sitting on a lawn chair on a sweltering June day with a cold beverage of choice in one hand and a book in the other. The feeling this song gives you is much like the feeling you’d get when a perfect breeze rolls through, making that sweltering June day feel perfect, even if it’s just momentarily.
According to Taylor herself, the original verse that inspired the tune was simply “I wear your cologne when I’m feeling alone.” And this verse alone tells the story of this song, just like a cologne or perfume that you haven’t smelled in a long time, it only takes one whiff to bring all the memories back.
