GOSHEN, Ind. – Each week, a Globe-pal (AKA a DJ at 91.1 the Globe) uploads a review of a Globe track that is sent out and posted on globeradio.org/music. The Globe Track of the Week is proudly presented by 91.1 the Globe, the best college radio station in Indiana.
When I was tasked with this week’s Globe Track of the Week and saw that “Johnny Moonshine” by Maggie Antone was my track, I was ecstatic.
From hearing the song daily around the Globe studios I was familiar with the energetic guitar intro that feels like it is bringing listeners into the studio with Antone during the recording. Pair that with Antone’s smooth vocals and it is one of the easiest listening experiences that I think someone could have.
“Johnny Moonshine” is a traditional love song that has an extra layer added to it. Of course, Antone sings of loving Johnny, but the song doesn’t just stop at the idea that the love is meant to be and that any measure will be taken to ensure the love comes to fruition. The song takes a dive into chasing that same love for a person despite the ups and downs that the person might face throughout their life.
I will be the first to admit that songs like this are not close to common on my personal playlist. It’s just about as far away from heavy metal, hip-hop, and classic rock as you can get, but even then I still find myself tapping my foot or bobbing my head to the song when I hear it.
I think that speaks volumes about the enchantment behind Antone’s writing and her voice. There is something to both of them that draws a listener in and keeps them hooked from start to finish of Johnny Moonshine’s story.
