GOSHEN, Ind. – If you ever read “The Great Gatsby” in high school, then you might be familiar with the symbolic green light in the book that symbolizes love, hopes and dreams. This is the first thing that I thought of when I heard this song, and surprisingly, I wasn’t that far off.
The song starts strong by putting singer, songwriter, guitarist and friend of Drew Holcomb, Vince Gill, front and center. The drums and bass keep the song grounded with a beat that you can easily tap your foot along to.
Throughout the song, Holcomb reflects on being a musician and having to travel all over the country while being an endless dreamer with plans for all his plans. He knows that it will take a special woman to keep up with his crazy lifestyle.
That’s what this song is about. Finding and recognizing those people in your life that keep you grounded and stay with you no matter what or where you go. For Holcomb, he knows that this woman will be his “green light,” his “cup of coffee when the morning comes,” his “umbrella in a rainstorm.”
In an Instagram post, Holcomb all but confirmed this idea while speaking about the collaboration with Vince Gill on the track. “I’m so honored to have him featured on the song. His wife Amy is a green light too, so I think he understands the sentiment behind the song.”
About three-quarters of the way through the song, Gill is back with a classic 80’s style solo. It reminds me of the opening guitar solo from “Johnny B. Goode.” Short and sweet but impressive and catchy.
This song is rhythmic, catchy, and upbeat to its core. After listening to the song, it inspired me to pause for a moment and take stock of who the “green lights” are in my life and I think that’s something we all can do more frequently.
Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors latest album, “Strangers No More, Vol. 2,” is available on streaming services everywhere.
