GOSHEN, Ind. From this week’s Globe Track of the Week is a song that’s reminiscent of a late afternoon drive. When the sun is starting to set, and you’re tired after a long day, a song like “True Black” comes on with that gospel feel to it that makes you want to bob your head. “True Black” is off of Jay Buchanan’s debut solo album “Weapons Of Beauty,” which was released on Jan. 9 2026.

The track spoke to me because it really has that feel of being able to tune into it at any time and just enjoy it. Not only is it Buchanan’s soulful singing, but the beat keeps you entertained all throughout the song. I think I’m one that loves songs that are very true to the artist and was something they put their heart and soul into. For Buchanan that was very true.

The story of how this track came to be was one that definitely interested me. Buchanan wrote the song while in isolation. No not jail, he was in an underground, windowless bunker in the Mojave Desert for three months to disconnect from modern distractions. He followed themes of accountability and redemption. If you’re telling me that isn’t dedication then I don’t know what that is.

The full album has a darker tone and follows deep personal emotions of Buchanan. “True Black” is one of the “pop-ier” songs on the full album, but to me personally I think it’s the best one. So if you’re looking to listen to a song that gets you through those tired afternoon drives, “True Black” is one that will make you want to spin it on repeat.
