GOSHEN, Ind. — From her most recent studio album, “Face the Feelings”, Jobi Riccio certainly faces her feelings in the record’s second track, “The Ridge.”
While Riccio’s debut album, “Whiplash” emerged from country and folk traditions, “Face the Feelings” finds itself in the world of electric indie-rock. In an album centered around emotional unrest, it makes sense that Riccio chose to hone in on a bolder sound that can build upon itself – similar to raw human feelings.
Despite the song’s upbeat opening instrumentals, Riccio begins the track by implicitly telling the listeners about her inner turmoil and uncertainty of what she is feeling. I’ve been walking lately // To feel the cold. As the first verse comes to a close, Riccio reveals that her anguish comes from an uncertain sense of self. Trying to remember who I am // When you are not around.
In its chorus, Riccio reveals the thesis of “The Ridge.” The more love you show me // The more I seem to need to be // Alone. This confession provides a necessary context to the next verse where Riccio allows herself to be more honest in what she is feeling.
As the song finishes, Riccio fully understands her tendencies to run from affection. You know what you want // And I can’t decide. The song’s final seconds are filled through emotional vocalizations from Riccio as she sings the word, Alone.
