GOSHEN, Ind. — “Tough Times Don’t Last” by Paul Thorn is about just that, getting through tough times, and understanding that no matter what, time keeps going and things will get better, but you have to make them better.
On Thorn’s website, he said this when asked about the song, “There are two kinds of people in the world. There are people that lay down and cry when faced with adversity and there are those that understand that you have to sometimes fight your way back up.”
This song has an old-school rock vibe, with claps and percussion starting the song, driving the momentum of the song. I’ve not heard a lot of voices like Paul Thorn, it reminds me of a soul singer, with lots of grit staying in that lower range. At some points, it’s like his voice becomes an instrument and blends in with the guitar, bass and brass.
The lyrics are relatively simple throughout the song, but the stars of the show come after the first chorus. A guitar solo takes center stage, but then, a piano comes in out of nowhere and immediately picks up the solo and elevates the whole song. It reminds me of a jazz solo, and you can’t help but tap your foot and nod your head along with the beat.
“Tough Times Don’t Last” is a song that everyone needs to listen to right now. It’s a great reminder that no matter what, you have to pick yourself back up and fight sometimes to get to that greener grass on the other side.
