GOSHEN, Ind. — There’s an innate sort of simplicity to heartache. I think that because of its simplicity, a song is the perfect medium to represent it. Lotte Gallagher’s “Can We Talk When It’s Over” is steeped in heartache, a theme she has carried over from her debut EP “A Better Feeling,” which was released near the end of last year.
I’ve found that the steady rhythm of the guitar and the ambient sound that fills the track make for a relaxing listening experience. In the weeks since its release, it has quickly moved to become Gallagher’s number one song. Everything from the instrumentation to her vocal delivery harkens to the inspirations she has referenced, such as Angie McMahon and Phoebe Bridgers — and I think that Gallagher’s music has the makings of a fitting addition to the genre.
Gallagher was a finalist in the triple j Unearthed High competition, which highlights high-school-age musicians who have the potential to become stars. At only 17 years old, the Australian artist has already passed 55 thousand listeners on Spotify, and as “Can We Talk When It’s Over” is no doubt a preview of another album yet to come, she is likely to keep climbing.
The lyric I appreciate most from this song is “You’re in the moment // I’m in my head.” Much of the song’s narrative seems to intentionally depict a mysterious central character whom Gallagher is addressing but doesn’t describe them directly. However, this line shows the contrast between the personalities that Gallagher is describing. I always want lyrics with a meaning that takes up more space than the words, and I think that line does that.
