GOSHEN, Ind. — Nostalgia, jangling guitar, and a one in a million voice all meld together at the beginning of “Cobra” by Geese, our Globe Track of the Week. The melodic guitar and tinny keys give way to one of the catchiest art punk songs you’ve never heard. Cameron Winter, the lead singer of Geese, has an eerie baritone voice bathed with vibrato and melancholy, and fronts the hottest band in New York right now.
Hot off the release of their third studio album, “Getting Killed,” Geese has set off an ambitious national and international tour, bringing their eclectic energy to stages through September of 2026. The band has seen critical acclaim since their beginning, with more widespread attention since the release of an equally acclaimed solo album by Winter in December of 2024.
“Cobra,” however, is in a league of its own. With many songs on Geese’s newest album playing heavily into the frantic presence of the rock four-piece, “Cobra” brings a softer, more touching, and melodic interpretation of the band’s style. Crooning about dancing, despite the efforts of the protagonist in the song to see the narrator follow in the footsteps of a charmed cobra, Winter imbues the almost delicate backing instrumentals with more powerful emotions.
Geese has been a band that’s brought about a revival of sorts in New York, taking the city back to the DIY roots of the rock scene, in a similar vein to the Strokes and Julian Casablancas. There’s a palpable energy and excitement surrounding the band, like the whole world is waiting to see what they do next, and where they take their clearly influential sound in the future.
