GOSHEN, Ind. – Each week, a Globe-pal (AKA a DJ at 91.1 the Globe) takes a song of their choosing, and dishes out a healthy review to be sent out and posted on globeradio.org/music.

The Globe Track of the Week is an excellent way to keep up with the new tunes presented weekly on 91.1 the Globe, the best college radio station in Indiana.

If there’s one word to describe “Dramamine” by Middle Kids, it has to be catchy. Even from the first notes of the opening guitar riff, you get the vibe and it’s a good one.

After a couple bars of a repeating ascending and descending guitar riff, the drums enter, presenting a simple pattern but with a full and forward sound. I like the drum pattern on this song, especially the hi-hat which has a cool syncopated moment every measure.

As the vocalist comes in, the melody feels lonely while the lone female vocalist says “I wanna be, I wanna be your little figurine, You know I never meant to tell you just how much it meant to me”.

The bass line in this song is interesting. It leaves a lot of space in the overall sound of the track, outlining the chords and supporting the groove. It’s almost designed to not be noticeable unless you think about it. The sentiment of ‘not noticeable until you pay attention’ is woven throughout the other instruments as well, and that’s what I think makes it so memorable. The whole song is simple and feels coherent, you don’t listen to one instrument, it’s all the instruments making their small contribution to the overall sound.

One thing I still don’t understand about this song is the title “Dramamine”. The song says that word once, it’s not in the chorus and it’s said with very  little fanfare. It’s an interesting choice for the title, but it’s memorable, just like the song.

Overall, the song is simple and cohesive, a great addition to our library.
