GOSHEN, Ind. — “How To Live” by Del Water Gap is one of those songs that you listen to to feel heard. “I know too much, it’s freaking me out // But there’s gold under the rust // Figuring out just how to live.” This chorus so beautifully captures the struggles of growing into adulthood — finding out what it takes to build your own life and grow as a person. With so many different things trying to draw our attention, some things get forgotten, and rust. But there is still something good there, gold, when you go back to clean the rust off.
What initially caught my attention in this song was the melodic build. It starts by meeting you where you are and invites you in with a rhythmic drive and a catchy melody. It jumps an octave and continues to build as the melody becomes more familiar. Finally, at the chorus, you see a release of the build. The rest of the band comes in with layers of complementary vocals and the same rhythmic drive that keeps you moving with the song.
The use of instrumentation in the second verse is ensnaring with just the right amount of continuity, while exploring a new groove. Del Water Gap manages the increasingly difficult task of capturing and keeping one’s attention through the whole song.
While a new album has not officially been announced, Del Water Gap has a new single, “Marigolds,” coming out September 2. If “How To Live” is any indication, I am eagerly awaiting the new single.
