GOSHEN, Ind. — Working in collaboration, the Avett Brothers and Mike Patton released an album together called AVTT/PTTN on November 14th of this year. They released two songs ahead of the album, Heaven’s Breath and this week’s Globe Track of the Week, Eternal Love.
The foundation of the song is the strumming of the guitar that reminds me of when my dad used to play guitar for me and my siblings. More instruments are layered on top, with some synthesized sounds sprinkled in, but the sound of the guitar is central to the whole song. The song embodies folk music in a way that both feels nostalgic and new. For me the blend of guitar and vocals takes me back to my dad playing guitar in the kitchen with the added interest of editing, something my dad was not doing live while he played.
The lyrics themselves are something that can easily connect to pretty much anyone, “Everyone has it, everyone knows, the dread of eternal love.” While it could be a reference to romantic love, I believe it could be any type of love. The song is a recognition that there is often hurt in love and that is something everyone has experienced. AVTT/PTTN, the Avett Brothers and Mike Patton, are going on tour together in 2026. While they aren’t stopping in Indiana, they are stopping in Columbus, Ohio and Ann Arbor, Michigan on June 18th and 19th. With additional dates and locations sprinkled across the country, details all tour dates on https://www.theavettbrothers.com/
