GOSHEN, Ind. – “Halo,” by Eddie 9V, is a song off the Atlanta-based artist’s latest project, “Saratoga.” It’s a catchy tune, showing off Eddie’s southern soul, blues and americana influences.
The song begins with a repetitive and easy-to-digest guitar riff that continues throughout most of the song. It gives the song a good structure and anchor for the rest of the instrumentation to do their thing.
My two favorite instruments that get featured during this song are the horns and the organ. The horns can be heard during the chorus, backing up and filling in Eddie’s vocals. The organ is more subtle but also present in the chorus. Its spinning and consistent sound drive the chorus and chord structure forward, while Eddie’s vocals sing of a lover being “too high, with your halo.”
“Saratoga” was a different kind of album for Eddie. He said in an interview with MNPR Magazine, “I was shooting for a more americana-type album this time, less blues songs and solos and more focusing on the songwriting.” One way he did this was enlisting his brother Lane Kelley, another respected southern musician, to help with the songwriting. The album was also mostly recorded in Eddie and Kelley’s home studio, a change from previous projects.
Even without a lot of soloing on the record overall, Eddie still finds space for it in “Halo,” with a short breakdown and guitar solo featured to close the song out. The organ comes into the front while women’s voices scream out, “Too high!” in the background, while the song slowly fades out.
