ELKHART, Ind. – Over the past four years, Schupan Industrial Recycling and the Elkhart Environmental Center have partnered together to create a Holiday Light recycling program for the community.

The purpose for the recycling program is to keep the chemicals and plastics inside light bulbs from reaching landfills.

The process for recycling lights is simple; just drop off old or discarded lights into the bin outside of the Elkhart Environmental Center main cabin.

In 2022-2023, more than 300 pounds of lights were donated, around double the amount dropped off the previous year.

Schupan and EEC both hope that the program grows to the point where they can bring in full truckloads worth of discarded lights.

People can drop off their lights in the box outside of the center all the way through January 31st, or taken directly to Schupan for recycling after the deadline.
