Public hiking trails are an essential part of the community and should be enjoyed by everyone, and now thanks to the Ashley VanVurst Sensory Trail app, even more people can.

The lead programmer of the app is Gabey Vogeler, a senior computer science major, who also plays for Goshen College’s Women’s soccer team. The app was developed so that people of any ability could utilize the nature trails in Goshen. Some of those features include, a read aloud function, text size that could be adjusted for people that have difficulty reading, and large enough buttons for people with motor function issues.

Gabey worked with fellow programmer Kevin Mazariegos-Perez who was instrumental in getting the app finished. While she isn’t looking to develop more apps in the near future, she still does hope to use the skills she’s learned both on the field and off the field, to the benefit of her community.
