GOSHEN, Ind. – The Lumineers’ latest single, “Same Old Song,” starts with their signature stomp and holler beat. An upbeat tempo throughout the song contrasts nicely with some of the more mid-tempo songs that often frequent The Globe.
“Same Old Song” tells the story of a struggling artist — unable to afford rent, feeling insecure, getting their instruments stolen, questioning the meaning of life and yet maintaining their dreams of making it big time. It wrestles with the reality of anxiety, depression and sentiment.
Repetition in the chorus reinforces the almost mundane nature of this life, and the likely exhaustion that comes with it: “Same old song // Singing the same old song // Singing the same old, same sad song.” The lyrics’ message comes across clearly on top of the steady beat and building chord progression.
Throughout the music video, circles are emphasized through both the camera movement and visual display in the background. The video also highlights that “Same Old Song” abbreviates to SOS. I can resonate with this feeling of being trapped in the cycle of the same old song wanting to call for help — sending out an SOS.
“Same Old Song” is The Lumineers’ first single for their upcoming album “Automatic.” The album, which will be released on Feb. 14, marks 20 years of songwriting between The Lumineers co-founders Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz. With a single like “Same Old Song,” I wait for the album with eager anticipation.
