GOSHEN, Ind. – “Bovine Excision” by Samia was newly released on Jan. 14 and instantly received as a fan favorite. It is a wolf in sheep’s clothing of a song, with a biting meaning mixed between gorgeous vocals. The song features a strumming guitar and a hard-hitting beat line. This along with the reverb on the vocals creates an ethereal experience while listening along. The song builds throughout, drawing you into sweeping melodies and rhythms. All this mixes with the artist’s message behind the lyrics if you listen hard while it’s playing.
This is, of course, describing the killing of livestock. Samia commented about her process: “I was drawn to the phenomenon of bloodless cattle mutilation as a metaphor for self-expression. This clinical pursuit of emptiness.” This is reflected in the lyrics with the final words of “Bovine Excision” being “And drained, drained bloodless” echoing into silence. It certainly would serve as an epic soundtrack on an indie coming-of-age flick. That or a thriller film with such a dark twist at the end of the song’s building climb.
Samia will be dropping more music on April 25 with her label Grand Jury. This will be her third album titled “Bloodless” which follows two other albums, “Honey” and “The Baby.” “Bovine Excision” serves as the new album’s lead single. If you are looking for more haunting melodies on the topic of femininity and the concept of God with kicking guitar and drums, you can preorder “Bloodless” at Samia’s Bandcamp: https://samia.bandcamp.com/album/bloodless.
