GOSHEN, Ind. – Each week, a Globe-pal (AKA a DJ at 91.1 the Globe) uploads a review of a Globe track that is sent out and posted on globeradio.org/music. The Globe Track of the Week is proudly presented by 91.1 the Globe, the best college radio station in Indiana.

Katie Pruitt has a way of creating music that so wonderfully balances a compelling instrumental with powerful lyrics.

Self Sabotage is a single from Pruitt’s sophomore album Mantras, released in April earlier this year. In this song, Pruitt brings us through the lows of personal insecurity, to self-acceptance and love. The lyrics emphasize the energy and dedication it takes to walk this path of healing.

In the lyrics, Pruitt describes the fear holding her back, “I don’t know how to let somebody know – I try to scream but fear has got me by the throat.”

Pruitt’s use of imagery throughout the song, and the driving instrumentals support Pruitt’s powerful vocals, bringing the lyrics to life. One lyrics that stand out to me is, “a prison of comparisons.” An image of feeling trapped by societal standards of beauty or presentation.

The tag at the end, where Pruitt repeats the line, “abandon this self-sabotage,” you can feel the building energy behind the vocals – a reflection of the energy it takes to go through the process of healing.

I appreciate the slightly rockier feel of some of the instrumentals that complement her voice to create her incredibly captivating sound.

The album as a whole centers around the process of healing, and self-discovery. For example, on her track, All My Friends, Pruitt sings about the experience of watching all your friends go through their own journeys of self-discovery. This is another favorite of mine, with Pruitt’s signature vocals and storytelling.

Katie Pruitt is currently on tour in the US, playing both headlining shows, and supporting Lake Street Dive.
