GOSHEN, Ind. – It takes a lot for a song to really slap me in the face with nostalgia, but this bold new collaboration that is Hayes and the Heathens from Hayes Carll and The Band of Heathens does just that. I wouldn’t have batted an eye if this track had started over the radio of my grandma’s old red bug after she had spent enough time digging through her CD collection before we headed to school.
I don’t know what exactly I would have called that genre, but even now it doesn’t seem to know what to call itself. The buildup to the new idea of Hayes & the Heathen promises stomp and holler, but The Band of Heathens Instagram went with country-funk, and the song currently sits at number four on the Americana charts, so maybe it isn’t even sure of itself.
Whatever it is though, it’s probably described from my listening experience as a foot-tapping good time. The combination of the down-to-earth lyrics, the catchy beat and instrumental breaks, and the powerful vocals is a tune that makes you want to roll down the windows on the back roads with your friends packing the backseat.
The music video for “Any Other Way” focuses on the making of the song, showing off the collaborative process that went into putting the track together. The video is a perfect compliment to this song, as the infectious joy that’s clear in watching the recording is just the vibe that the song conveys. It’s hard to take a moment to really listen and not find yourself smiling along. Like the band so aptly puts it, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
