GOSHEN, Ind. – The song “So Glad You Made It” by Fantastic Cat begins with a resonant piano that sets an emotional tone, gradually giving way to raspy, raw vocals accompanied by a light guitar and drums that gradually build in intensity.
The opening lines reflect a woman who has experienced much and acknowledges she is no longer the same person she once was. Something that I really liked about this song and that carries through the music is the subtle variations in the strings that add texture and depth, creating an atmospheric quality.
As the harmonies grow more leading up to the lyrics, “so glad you made it.” The introduction of additional harmonized vocals in the chorus elevates the moment, creating a sense of emotional release that matches this feeling of relief and celebration that despite everything, she has persevered and made it through.
The second verse highlights the contrast between her growth and the stagnation of her roots. I think that everyone who moves far from friends and family can resonate with this feeling of moving on, but what you left is still stuck in time.
The bridge leads to the part that I loved most where the gentle piano returns, reintroducing the song’s initial delicate feeling. The build-up here’s gradual as the layers of instruments and harmonies once again begin to grow which leads up to the lyric, “Fell asleep in a flower bed with rows of roses ’round my head” — my favorite lyric.
The layered vocals on the chorus, paired with an image of someone resting on a bed with roses, evoke a bland peace and pain. The song ends with a noticeable acceleration in tempo, adding a sense of urgency before the track slowly fades out.
I recommend watching the music video, which shows the collaboration between the band and Adam Duritz from Counting Crows in a funny way.
