GOSHEN, Ind. – Each week, a Globe-pal (AKA a DJ at 91.1 the Globe) uploads a review of a Globe track that is sent out and posted on globeradio.org/music. The Globe Track of the Week is proudly presented by 91.1 the Globe, the best college radio station in Indiana.
“Messy As A Magnolia” is the second track off American Aquarium’s 2024 album The Fear of Standing Still. The song starts strong with a simple drum fill, and the band comes in immediately, playing a catchy, simple, relatable riff. The whole intro screams Americana, in a good way.
The vocals enter with the first verse, and I immediately laugh because the first lyrics are the song’s title. The vocals are raspy while still being clear and distinguishable.
One thing I really appreciate about this song is how well I can hear every instrument. I did a couple of listens through the song, just focusing on one individual element, which changed how I listened to the song the next time. Even during the chorus, when the electric guitars become more present, the rest of the mix still holds strong.
One thing that I didn’t love about this song was its consistently high energy level. Now, I know how weird that sounds, but I love contrast in songs – whether that be through volume, tempo, or just how the band is playing. This track just doesn’t have a lot of that. The first moments of the song are what you get for the whole track.
Overall, I think this song can be classified as a 91.1 The Globe “banger.” It’s high energy, catchy and fits our vibe perfectly.
